Paper Usage Facts:
- Since 1982,
production of office paper has grown 60%.
- North American
businesses generate approximately 1 trillion new pieces of paper every year.
- In 1997 the total world paper and paperboard
production was 299,044 metric tons. It would take about 200,000 Volkswagen
Beetle cars to equal this weight.
- A wall about 12 feet
high, stretching from New York to Seattle could be built with the paper that
businesses throw out each year.
- According to Hewlett
Packard, email, which was supposed to reduce the amount of printed paper,
resulted in a 40% increase in printing volumes.
- In the last 20 years, the combined usage of
today’s top ten paper users has increased from 92 million tons to 208 million,
which is a growth of 126%. So the use of computers is not slowing the amount
paper we use.
- To fill a
four-drawer filing cabinet costs about $25,000 including the time to generate,
process and deal with the paper.
- Approximately 3% of
documents are misfiled, which translates into another $120 per document to
retrieve them.
- North Americans sent
approximately 65 billions faxes in 1997.
- The U.S. consumption of paper and paperboard
in 1999 was approximately 354 kilograms (about 800 pounds) per person.
